Onboarding

Since its beginnings in 1906 with the construction of its first power plant in Finnforsen near Skellefteå, Skellefteå Kraft has made remarkable progress.

Initially providing electricity to the public and fueling industrial growth, the company is now one of Sweden’s largest power producers, employing over 750 people and operating across much of northern Sweden. Hydropower has remained Skellefteå Kraft’s primary energy source, contributing to over 80% of its production being renewable.

About the project

With over 750 employees, Skellefteå Kraft invests significant effort into supporting its staff. A new, tailored system named Slussen was developed and now helps the organization integrate key systems to support employees throughout their journey with the company.

In 2019, Skellefteå Kraft initiated a process to improve and simplify onboarding—the introduction of new employees. Early on, it became clear that a new system was needed to connect the relevant systems seamlessly. This included managing new roles in the workplace, changes in employment conditions, and employment terminations.

My role

My role in this project was to design the User Experience, User Interface and the components used to build it. The system was branded according to Skellefteå Krafts styling guide.

Design workflow

Skellefteå Kraft required a customized onboarding solution, and Nethouse was entrusted with the task. I served as the UX/UI designer for the project, working closely with Skellefteå Kraft’s team to ensure the solution aligned with their needs.

To kick off the project, we established a clear structure through close collaboration. Skellefteå Kraft provided project management and business insights, while we worked closely with their developers and IT staff to understand the existing systems and integration requirements.

The design process began with analyzing key business insights and engaging with stakeholders, including HR users, to understand their needs. I mapped user flows in a detailed diagram to visualize each stage of the process. Developers were involved early to align on integration points and refine the flows collaboratively.

Using these insights, I developed a prototype, which was presented to the customer. Feedback was gathered and iterated upon until the user flows felt seamless. Once finalized, I applied Skellefteå Kraft’s brand guidelines, incorporating their colors, fonts, and design principles. The branded design was tested and refined before delivering the final solution.

The result was SLUSSEN, a user-friendly system that simplifies onboarding and internal transitions. As Anna-Maria Andersson, Project Manager for SLUSSEN, remarked:

“This was a collaborative and agile project where Aspire’s developers focused on Skellefteå Kraft’s functional needs for preboarding and onboarding. The partnership between our teams ensured a high-quality IT solution that can evolve and be maintained over time. We’re very pleased with the result.”
